The Teaching and Learning Institute (TLI) is an autonomous unit within the University whose overarching goal is to foster a culture of excellence in university teaching and learning. The Institute’s main function is to teach cross-cutting modules that include Communication Skills and languages namely Portuguese, French, IsiNdebele and ChiShona. These cross-cutting modules are offered to all students at different levels of study as well as to staff, with this opportunity to be extended to the external community in the near future. The advantage of a student being competent in at least a foreign language and another language besides one’s mother tongue gives that student an edge over other students who do not have that competence. The other role of the Institute is to foster a culture of excellence in University teaching and learning through seminars for all staff that are aimed at inculcating best practices in the teaching and assessment standards of students. The Teaching and Learning Institute recently introduced the Post Graduate Diploma in Higher and Tertiary Education. The target group for the programme is university and college lecturers.
