Overview of the Department

Our department is a dynamic center for exploration, discovery, and creation. As we live and work in this ‘age of rapid digital transformation,’ our department is leading the charge about the education of the future generation of technologists, innovators, and guardians of security for the future that we are building today.

The Department currently houses two programmes:
Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Agricultural Engineering (5-year programme), and Master of Science in Mechanisation Systems Analysis and Management (2-year programme).

Guided by Education 5.0, the Department integrates teaching, research, innovation, industrialisation and community engagement to develop practical engineering solutions that enhance productivity, value addition and technological advancement in Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector.

Vision:

To be a leading centre of excellence in mechanisation, engineering innovation and technology- driven solutions for sustainable agriculture, agro-industrial development and national industrialisation.

Objectives of the department:

The Department of Mechanisation and Technology aims to:

  • Provide quality undergraduate and postgraduate education in agricultural engineering and mechanisation systems.
  • Promote applied research and innovation that addresses real-world challenges in agriculture, mechanisation and agro-industrial systems.
  • Develop and adapt appropriate mechanisation technologies for smallholder, medium and large- scale farming systems.
  • Support industrialisation and entrepreneurship through technology development, prototyping and engineering-based enterprises.
  • Strengthen community engagement and industry collaboration through technology transfer, consultancy and capacity-building initiatives.

Programmes Offered and Entry Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Agricultural Engineering

Programme Duration: 5 years The programme equips students with engineering knowledge and practical skills for the design, operation and management of systems used in agricultural production, processing, irrigation, energy and environmental management.

    • Normal Entry

At least five Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Physical Science or Physics with grade C or better, and

Two Advanced Level passes in Mathematics and/or Physics, or acceptable equivalents such as Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, Food Sciences, Crop Science, Computer Science, Technical Graphics, Geography or Information Technology.

    • Special Entry
