Centre for Agricultural Engineering and Technology

Overview

The Centre for Agricultural Engineering and Technology (CAET) was established with the mandate of establishing, improving and upscaling relevant technologies in the agricultural sector. The Centre currently houses three sections, namely Farm Mechanisation, Farm Power & Energy, and Irrigation. The Centre will house the BSc Honors Degree in Agricultural Engineering with specialisations in Irrigation and Mechanisation. The Centre’s products and services will be employed in a variety of institutions from commercial, communal and private farm enterprises, cooperatives, consultancy firms, Higher and Tertiary Education Institutions, public-sector and community-based organizations.

Vision

To be a hub for agro engineering technology and promotion of import reduction through development of home grown products.

Mission

Contributing to agricultural engineering and technology through the development of tools and equipment for the various areas of agriculture, improved efficiency and reduced cost of farm power.

Function

To enhance the output in the agricultural sector there is need to improve the technologies that are being used by the farmers at all levels.

  • The Mechanisation Section has the main function of designing, fabricating and upscaling technologies from the various departments across faculties, and outsourcing its services to farmers and institutions around the university campuses
  • The Power and Energy Section’s drive is to establish sustainable power sources for the farming community, and will focus on training farmers on new technologies as well as the necessary skills so as to maintain the required efficiency of related power and energy systems. Its focus will be on green energy sources like solar, wind, methane gas and bio-fuels.
  • The Irrigation Section will focus on the improvement of irrigation techniques and technologies allowing farmers to increase productivity as well as remove the limitation of seasonal production through trainings on selection, use and maintenance of irrigation equipment.
